J&K question from JKP Constable exam, 2024 by JKSSB

Consider the following statements.

I) The Banihal Qazigund Tunnel renamed as Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Tunnel.
II) It is India's longest transportation railway tunnel measuring 11.2 km long.

Choose the correct option.

Last updated May 15, 2026
Correct Answer: Option D — Neither I nor II is correct
Analysis of Statement I
Statement I is incorrect. The Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Tunnel is actually the renamed Chenani-Nashri Tunnel (a road tunnel on NH-44), not the Banihal-Qazigund Tunnel.

The Banihal-Qazigund Tunnel is a separate double-tube road tunnel (8.45 km) that bypassed the Jawahar Tunnel to provide all-weather connectivity.

Analysis of Statement II
Statement II is incorrect. There are two errors here:

Identity: The tunnel measuring 11.2 km is the Pir Panjal Railway Tunnel (also known as the T-80).

Current Status: While the Pir Panjal Tunnel (11.2 km) was the longest for a long time, it has been surpassed by the T-49 Tunnel (on the Katra-Banihal section), which is now India's longest railway tunnel at approximately 12.75 km.
